Markdown syntax reference

Every core Markdown element (CommonMark) with its syntax: headings, emphasis, lists, links, images, code, quotes, tables and escaping. Save files as .md, UTF-8, LF line endings.

What a .md file is

Markdown is plain text with lightweight symbols that render to HTML. A .md file is readable raw and rendered (GitHub, GitLab, VS Code, docs sites).

Extension: .md (also .markdown)
Encoding: UTF-8, line endings LF
Base spec: CommonMark; most platforms add GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) on top
