Docker/Basics/docker cp

CommandUpdated 3 weeks ago

docker cp

Copies files and folders between a container and the host, in either direction. Works on stopped containers too.

Command

Copy in and out

SHELL

1# Container -> host

2docker cp <container>:/app/logs/app.log ./app.log

3docker cp <container>:/etc/nginx/ ./nginx-conf/

4

5# Host -> container

6docker cp ./config.json <container>:/app/config.json

7

8# Contents of a folder (note the trailing /.)

9docker cp ./dist/. <container>:/usr/share/nginx/html/

Gotchas

Paths inside the container must be absolute
Files copied in are lost when the container is recreated. For anything permanent, use a volume, bind mount or the Dockerfile
Works on stopped containers, handy for grabbing logs or core dumps from a crashed one
Copied files keep the host UID/GID unless you add -a
